Service Description

This workshop takes place every 2nd Wednesday of the month. Sign up for one: February 8th March 8th April 12th May 10th Photovoice is a research method and a community organizing tool. Photovoice is used as a qualitative method and organizing tool where participants take photos that relate to a topic (usually a topic or subject matter that the group decides together). The Photovoice facilitator guides the group of participants through taking photos, organizing photos, categorizing and analyzing themes from the photos and narratives, and guides a Photovoice Focus Group Discussion with the participants. Often times, there are public or private events where the photos and narratives are presented in an exhibition. The goal is for participants to speak their truth through a photo(s) and short narrative (Photo + Voice). Brittni Howard is a qualitative researcher with experience in a variety of ethnographic and community-based participatory research methods. With a Master's in applied anthropology and as a current PhD candidate at Umass Amherst, Brittni engages participants in the Photovoice workshop on specific tools, ethical considerations, and the basic framework of the Photovoice method. You will learn: The history and meaning of Photovoice. The prominent ethical dilemmas that commonly occur. The basic framework and tools used in a Photovoice project. An introduction to how you might use Photovoice for your own project.
